What is Neuromodulator/ Botulinum toxin injections?

Neuromodulators (Botulinum toxin, including Botox® and similar treatments) are medications that gently relax specific facial and neck muscles. By softening these muscles, they can reduce or even erase the appearance of fine lines, giving the face a smoother, more refreshed look. Other times, Botox is used to create balance to facial muscles.

Before procedure:

We start with a personalized consult so we can create a treatment plan together. Your concerns will be addressed, and we will review your medical history, and expectations of the treatment. Pricing will be discussed together after a treatment plan has been discussed.

Your “Before Photos” will then be taken, with consent of course. During this time, I’ll ask you to make certain facial expressions to work the facial muscles giving you wrinkles.

Your face will be cleaned with alcohol. Some temporary markings will be made on your face so precise injections can be delivered.

Pre-treatment:

  • Avoid any alcohol for at least 24 hours before appointment
  • Avoid anti-inflammatory medications, Aspirin at least 24 hours before treatment

During procedure:

The treatment area is numbed with ice before fine needles are injected into the relevant active muscles. You will feel a small prick.  If there is any bleeding, the treated area will be iced to avoid bruising. The actual injection procedure is very quick!

After procedure:

  • Avoid squeezing or massaging treated areas for at least 12 hours
    • This could subtly change the results
  • Do not exercise, use the sauna hot tub or be directly under the sun for at least 6 hours after treatment
    • Facial flushing can cause dilation of blood vessels. The concern is that the neuromodulators injected may diffuse to other groups of muscles and cause complications
  • Avoid lying down for at least 4 hours after treatment
    • This is to prevent neuromodulators from diffusing to other areas of treatment, most concerning the muscles around the eyes to cause droopy eyelids

Usually, it takes around 3-7 days for the effects of the neuromodulator to become noticeable, though it could take up to 14 days to see the full impact. During this time, you might observe slight asymmetry in the treated areas as the neuromodulator settles into its effect.

Typically 2-4 months.

It depends on many factors:

  • Area of treatment
    • The more you use the muscles, or make certain facial expressions, the faster you will see the effect of neuromodulators wear off
  • Dosage
    • Some patients prefer more facial movement and therefore less dosing. If this is the case, patients often find the duration to be less than 3 months.
  • Depth of wrinkles and type of wrinkles
  • Metabolism
    • Your metabolism including your level of physical activity can affect the duration of neuromodulator results. Athletes or patients exercising most days of the week may notice shorter periods of effects because their bodies are breaking down the botulinum toxin faster than someone who has a sedentary lifestyle.

You’re always welcome to book a follow-up appointment about 14 days after your treatment. This visit is especially valuable if it’s your first time with any new injector, since it allows us to see how your results are settling. At your follow-up, we’ll also take post-procedure photos to help us assess your progress and fine-tune your treatment plan if needed.

  • Pregnancy and breast feeding
Neuromodulators are generally safe when administered by trained professionals in controlled settings. Side effects, if any, are usually mild and temporary, including possible bruising or temporary weakness in treated muscles.
